Goodbye, My Friend

notes:
hello, my friend
just stopped in to see your face again
our trials have finally reached their end
and i just needed one smile
to carry me through the next
all i ever wanted
was to grasp a strand of light
snatch a figment of eternity
and wrap it up in fright
sprinkle on some tears
and a few clever jokes
present this gift to you
before i had to go
and say
goodbye, my friend
i was only ever trying to
earn the right to hurt you
one more time
you gave to me a majesty
wrapped in a messy honesty
by ever-constant searching
for ever-truer themes
in return i crafted a muddy mimicry
of ever-ever-changing infinite creativity
our messy masterpiece
our march through wicked time
day by day
we survived on another wretched rhyme
not much of a confession here
if you read between my lines
yes, i indulged the pain there
wasn't it divine
goodbye, my friend
i was only ever trying to
earn the right to hurt you
one more time
no difference to me
between ugly and beauty
the dark is where the light begins
i now have other trials to endure
but i'll carry your smile
through the next end
goodbye, my friend
i was only ever trying to
earn the right to hurt you
one last time
goodbye
goodbye
goodbye
